Fort Worth's Trusted Children's Dentist
Children’s teeth need just as much care as adult teeth. Actually, they need tender loving care in order to “grow up big and strong” and provide a lifetime of healthy and happy smiles. Dr. Givan and his team love having kids in the office and we want some of those kids to be yours. We promise to treat your children with gentleness and kindness, so they will always have happy memories of visiting their dentist in Fort Worth.
Even before you begin bringing your children to see Dr. Givan—and according to the American Dental Association, their first appointment should be around the time they turn one year old—it’s important for you to take care of your children’s teeth. During infancy, be sure to rinse their gums with a soft, moistened cloth after they eat. This not only removes the sugars that are in breast milk or formula, but also begins to accustom them to having their teeth cleaned. You can begin brushing their teeth with a soft baby toothbrush and a dab of toothpaste when that first little tooth appears.
Your Child's Visit
Just like mommy and daddy, children need to come to Dr. Givan two times each year for a dental checkup. Granted, their first couple of visits won’t take much time—we understand that little ones simply may not be able to sit that long—but we will always manage to clean their teeth, examine for tooth decay and take a look at their gums, too. Children’s mouths are susceptible to the same oral health problems as adults, including cavities and periodontal disease. Therefore, daily brushing and flossing are as important for their teeth as yours. And while your kids may want to brush their own teeth, Dr. Givan suggests parents continue to supervise this important oral health activity until they are at least eight or nine years old.
Dental Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
To help kids have healthy and strong teeth, Dr. Givan often recommends dental sealants and fluoride treatments. Both are intended to help teeth win the never-ending battle against decay. Dental sealants are a hard and clear plastic layer that covers the biting surfaces of your child’s molars. These teeth are particularly susceptible to cavities among children, because they have deep grooves and pits that can be difficult for children to clean thoroughly. A naturally occurring mineral, fluoride has been proven to reinforce enamel, the hard outer layer of each tooth. We apply fluoride as a topical gel or cream that is absorbed over the course of a few minutes. While these treatments are not a substitute for a home hygiene routine and regular checkups, they will help your children have healthier smiles.
