General and Family Dentistry
In keeping with the recommendation of the American Dental Association, Dr. Givan would like to see you and each family member at least twice a year for regular dental checkups. You may already know that these appointments are when one of our dental hygienists thoroughly clean your teeth and remove plaque that may have built up on the surface of your teeth, in between your teeth, and along the gum line. But did you know that this is also the time when Dr. Givan monitors your oral health in order to find dental problems early?
At these appointments, we carefully check for the signs of tooth decay and gum disease. Finding either of these conditions sets a particular course of treatment in motion that stops either of these from becoming big problems that can ultimately lead to big expenses. For example, we would much rather find decay before a cavity has the chance to grow and possibly infect the interior of your tooth—necessitating root canal therapy—or spread to adjacent teeth. Caught early, a small cavity can be repaired with a tooth-colored filling that no one will know is there except for you and Dr. Givan.
To help guard against tooth decay in the first place, Dr. Givan may recommend fluoride treatments or dental sealants. Usually thought to be best for children, these treatments can also benefit adults. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens enamel, so you are better able to ward off tooth decay naturally. For an added layer of protection, there are dental sealants. These start out as a liquid plastic that is applied to the biting surface of your molars and then hardened with a special curing light. Once in place, sealants are a solid barrier between your teeth and the bacteria that cause decay. We’ll keep an eye on your sealants, which can last 10 years or more.
Beyond these services, our general and preventive dentistry practice also offers:
- Periodontal Therapy
- Sleep Apnea Therapy
- Oral Cancer Screenings
- Nightguards to prevent teeth grinding
- Mouthguards for the athletes in your family
- Emergency Dentistry
